LED is a proven anti-ageing method that is often used in professional facial treatments to rejuvenate skin, clear up acne, improve uneven skin tone and eliminate fine lines, but what is it, and how does it work?

Before you start bathing face first under the glow of your LED downlights at home, let’s get one thing straight, this version of LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, and it was originally developed to fast-track the healing of wounds and post surgery scars. The light that comes from these devices is different from UV (also very different from the LED bulbs in your ceiling), which means your skin won’t be damaged by this type of exposure, in fact it benefits from it! LED is good for all skin types, colours and conditions, plus it’s entirely safe and can’t be overused.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The same way plants absorb and convert sunlight, our skin absorbs therapeutic light and uses it as a source of energy to stimulate cellular regeneration to produce collagen and elastin, reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process.

There are different types of light therapy, depending on what your skin concern is. Blue light kills bacteria, making it great for acne, whereas red light is anti-inflammatory and works to calm skin conditions and even reverse the premature signs of ageing. The effectiveness of at-home LED products on the market varies, but the best types of at-home devices have typically 10-20 LED bulbs.

RED LIGHT LED THERAPY

Red light penetrates the deeper layer of the dermis, tapping into the cells that are responsible for loss of collagen and elastin. These cells are then kick-started and the result is plumped up with new collagen (which pushes out the wrinkles like you’re 20 years old again) and new elastin which helps tighten the skin and give it more elasticity. It also leaves skin more radiant and over time, brown spots and sun damage fade away and are replaced with healthier skin.

BLUE LIGHT LED THERAPY

A bacteria commonly found on the skin is propionibacterium acnes, aka p. acnes, and it is a key part of how acne is formed. Combine blocked pores with a build up of oil and p. acnes bacteria starts to multiply, causing an inflammatory reaction. Blue LED therapy stimulates the oil glands and releases a molecule called porphyrin, these compounds kill the p. acnes bacteria. By decreasing the number of bacteria, there is less of it laying around waiting to cause inflammation and acne on the skin.
